His surprising journey takes us through his time in the Army where he met his good friend, Elvis Presley, his experiences with Civil War history, health, wellness, and family.
Only 24 years old when he was drafted into the 2nd armored division of the United States Army, Richard boarded a bus in 1958 bound for Fort Hood.
“I thought I’d be going to Fort Jackson in Florida where I’d be able to get weekend passes and come home, but I remember the sergeant saying ‘Y’all are going to Fort Hood.’ I thought ‘Where is Fort Hood?’ Turns out it was in Texas, where the armored divisions…the tanks…do their training. My division was General Patton’s division, called Hell on Wheels.”
