Volunteers like Dennis help

us meet the challenge

Thank you to all who have answered the call

Dennis Bentson originally came to Open Hand to pack meals alongside his coworkers from Citibank. But two years ago, when we were in dire need of weekday volunteer drivers, Dennis stepped up without hesitation. 600 volunteer hours later, Dennis is always happy to drive any route, virtually any day.

“I’d much rather be outside than inside, so I’ve been driving 2 or 3 days a week. To me, every volunteer hour I can give means more money is going towards providing meals for those who need it.”

In the course of delivering to hundreds of clients, there are definitely those that Dennis tries to stay connected with. “It’s always nice to see someone you’ve built a relationship with, even if it’s just a minute or so when you’re dropping off their food. And everyone I’ve ever delivered to is always so gracious.”

We wouldn’t be able to provide meals if it weren’t for dedicated volunteers like Dennis. And while we can’t wait to welcome our volunteers back into the kitchen and packing room, we’re always looking for drivers to help us meet the increased demand for our meals during this pandemic.
